Airworthiness and registration were present. Airframe condition In general the airframe is in great structural condition with no corrosion present. Paint is a 3/10 due to is age. No control surface cracking or corrosion on either the tail surfaces or ailerons. The windows and windscreen were in excellent and appear to be fairly new with no crazing or scratches evident. Interior The interior is functional but old, 4/10. The oil pressure gauge was functional but hanging loose from the instrument panel. The avionics/ instruments were all present and functioned during the run up. ADs Up to date (see AD sheet 6/2/23. The wing spar dye penetrant inspection was completed per AD 95-04-03 and no evidence of cracking around the Huck bolts was found. AD 94-20-04 R2: completed 12/17/02 AD 89-05-02 completed 6/3/23 Landing gear and tires The landing gear was swung, lubricated and inspected and no faults were found. All three tires need replacing due to age. The right brake bleeder valve was leaking The right main wheel bearing was loose. The landing gear warning horn did not function. Engine The engine was major overhauled in 2002. 80 hours have accumulated since the overhaul. Compressions: #1 68/80 #2 50/80 #3 66/80 #4 70/80 #5 64/80 #6 64/80 #2 has evidence of a stuck exhaust valve as there was a hissing from the exhaust pipe. No leaks were evident. On run-up the engine started easily and ran fairly smooth considering the #2 compressions. The mag check was good and prop function was acceptable. The magneto switch/master did not functional well and had a position where the mags remained hot. Replacement switch is required. The magnetos need to be overhauled. No evidence of this being done at the overhaul. Fuel lines were replaced 3 years ago. Terminal wire on fuel pressure gauge is broken. Alternator bracket is owner built and furnished and has no 337 paperwork. Propeller Functions well and has no evidence of leaking. The prop control has no spring back and will have to be adjusted. The prop has not been overhauled since new. There is no requirement for an overhaul. Misc. The ELT is an old 121.5 version and needs a new battery. The fuel tank filler area needs the 100LL markings to be replaced. Conclusion: The airframe is in great condition. The ADs are up to date. In general, this is a nice airplane but will require some investment to bring it up to an airworthy condition. It is not in annual and will require one in Rice Lake or a ferry permit to get it to a shop. Joe Nepute A&P- IA 2273930 Leeward Hot Air balloons and Aircraft services
