Aircraft > Single-Engine Piston > Pitts > N8351: Pitts S-1C
I'm selling my hangar. Time has caught up with me and I may never finish modifying and recovering my Pitts. This is an early model with the flat bottom airfoil and the slightly shorter lower wing. Its fuselage has been extended and it has some changes to make it like the later S1-C, such as bearings on elevator center support, added elevator trim tab, strap hinges on empennage control surfaces, and aluminum side panels to make cockpit control access easier. Rear of fuselage was modified to use either a tubular locking tailwheel or the more traditional steerable tailwheel. All steel parts were soda blasted and powder coated at American Champion. Engine was rebuilt to zero time by Tom Wottreng in Wisconsin. It is pretty spunky with 10:1 pistons. All new cylinders; crank and case trued, mags rebuilt. It has inverted oil (Christen) and inverted fuel, plus the small smoke or whatever tank in upper wing. The plane raced two years at Reno and placed well against O-360s. Racing number 51, named Fear This. It is faster than the later S1-C because there is less drag with two ailerons, flatter airfoil, and less wing area. It also stalls at a lower speed and rolls slower, making it more docile for less-sporty aviators (but it is still a Pitts and a blast to fly.) I also have lots of the heavy covering material and various extras because I was going to complete the rebuild myself. All parts are here, although the nice new engine might like to have a new baffle set. Old one can be used as a template. It comes with both the early and late set of plans for the S1-C. Most of the value is in the new engine, but I have to sell it together with the airframe.
